13 hospitalised after turbulence on New Zealand flight

Some 13 plane passengers have been rushed to hospital in New Zealand after the plane experienced serious turbulence on a LATAM Airlines flight from Sydney to Auckland, first responders said today.

“Our ambulance crews assessed and treated approximately 50 patients, with one patient in a serious condition and the remainder in a moderate to minor condition,” Gerard Campbell of St John Ambulance New Zealand said, adding that 13 patients had been taken to hospital by ambulance.

“The plane landed at Auckland Airport as scheduled. As a result of the incident, some passengers and cabin crew were affected.

“They received immediate assistance and were evaluated or treated by medical staff at the airport as needed,” a LATAM spokesperson told the New Zealand Herald.

The flight involved was LA800, the report said. It was flown by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, according to data from flight tracking service Flightaware.

Boeing and LATAM did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.
