Level of human suffering in Rafah ‘shocking’

The Tánaiste has said he is “really horrified” by the situation in Rafah, saying it is “unconscionable” that the violence in the region continues.

Israel has threatened a major attack on Rafah to defeat thousands of Hamas fighters it claims are holed up there, but Western nations and the United Nations have warned a full-scale assault on Rafah would be a humanitarian catastrophe.

Yesterday, the United States said the closure of border crossings into Gaza was “unacceptable”.

Speaking to RTÉ News at the Arbour Hill commemoration event in Dublin, Fianna Fail leader Micheál Martin said he wants to see a ceasefire and political resolution to the crisis in the Middle East.

“I’m really horrified with what is happening, it’s quite shocking, the level of human suffering, the civilian casualties on a daily basis being occurred by people of Gaza,” he said.

“The taking of the Rafah crossing for example creates huge challenges of getting aid into Gaza. There’s an urgent need for medicines and food to get into people of Gaza,” the Tánaiste said.

He continued to say that it is “unconscionable that this level of violence continues” and that “we need a ceasefire and political progress” on how Gaza is “reconstructed”.

“What people gone through is quite horrific, and it has to stop,” he said.
