Closing the News at One programme on RTÉ Radio 1 this afternoon, broadcaster Bryan Dobson shared a message sent by the late Charlie Bird after Mr Dobson announced his retirement.
Mr Dobson shared his condolences with Mr Bird’s wife Claire, daughters Orla and Neasa and his extended family.
The News at One presenter then shared a text sent by Mr Bird earlier this year.
“‘Please enjoy the next phase of your career. I would just love to hug you,” Mr Dobson read.
Mr Bird died yesterday following his lengthy battle with motor neurone disease.
In January, Mr Dobson said he will retire at the end of April after working as a journalist and broadcaster with RTÉ News for 37 years.
