Garda questioned over fatal hit-and-run incident



A member of An Garda Síochána has been arrested and questioned following a fatal hit-and-run incident in the early hours of St Patrick’s Day.

The incident happened before 2.30am on Rathmullen Road in Drogheda, Co Louth on 17 March.

Gardaí said the vehicle involved failed to remain at the scene.

A man in his 40s was found unresponsive and was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The deceased man was named as Niall McEneaney.

Mr McEneaney was well known in the local area, in the GAA community and was a former Louth hurler.

A member of An Garda Síochána was suspended from duty while the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission investigated the incident after receiving a referral from gardaí.

GSOC has confirmed that a person has been arrested and interviewed as part of it is investigation.

It said the investigation remains ongoing and no further comment will be made at this time.
