Big year for Irish film talent at Cannes


There is strong Irish interest at this year’s Cannes Film Festival with new films from the Dublin-based Element Pictures and Tailored Films, actor Barry Keoghan, and director Lorcan Finnegan among the line-up.

Kinds of Kindness reunites Element Pictures with Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos, stars Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, and Margaret Qualley, and Irish cinematographer Robbie Ryan. Kinds of Kindness will receive its world premiere at the festival and will screen in competition.

In the Un Certain Regard section of the festival, the Element Pictures-produced September Says, directed by Ariane Labed, will be part of the programme. Actor-turned-director Labed’s debut feature was filmed in Ireland.

Also in the Un Certain Regard programme, Element Pictures’ On Becoming a Guinea Fowl, the new film from director Rungano Nyoni, will screen. It was filmed in Zambia with post-production taking place in Ireland.

The Apprentice, a biopic about the early years of Donald Trump by Iran-born director Ali Abbasi, includes the Dublin-based Tailored Films among its producers. It will receive its world premiere and screen in competition at Cannes.

Bird, the new film from writer-director Andrea Arnold, includes Barry Keoghan among its cast and Arnold’s longtime collaborator Robbie Ryan as cinematographer. It will also receive its world premiere and screen in competition at Cannes.

The Surfer, the new Nicolas Cage-starring film from Irish director Lorcan Finnegan (Vivarium), will be shown as part of the Midnight Screenings programme at Cannes. Finnegan’s Lovely Productions is among the producers of The Surfer.

Both The Apprentice and September Says were supported by Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland, which said it is “delighted that there is such a strong presence for Irish film and creative artists” at Cannes.

Beating Hearts, which is a French film is based on the book Jackie Loves Johnser OK by an Irish author Neville Thompson, will also screen in competition.

Also at this year’s festival, legendary director Francis Ford Coppola will return with his long-awaited epic Megalopolis; horror maestro David Cronenberg presents what is billed as his most personal film yet, The Shrouds; and George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the latest instalment of the post-apocalyptic franchise, will receive its world premiere, playing out of competition

The festival, with Barbie director Greta Gerwig as Jury President, runs from 14 to 25 May.
