Alexei Navalny’s widow to address European Parliament

The widow of former Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny will address the European Parliament later this morning.

Yulia Navalnaya will pay tribute to the life and work of her late husband, who died in a remote penal colony earlier this month.

Her visit to the European Parliament comes at a time when security and defence looms large on its agenda.

Many MEPs have expressed concern over a growing risk to European security from Russia.

Tomorrow afternoon MEPs will vote on a resolution condemning the death of Mr Navalny.

The text is also calling for EU action in support of political prisoners and “oppressed civil society in Russia”.

There have been calls too from some MEPs for an independent investigation into his death.

Three years ago the European Parliament awarded Mr Navalny its top human rights award, the Sakharov Prize, which was received by his daughter, Daria Navalnaya.

Former European Parliament President David Sassoli said it was given in recognition of his “bravery” in opposing corruption in Russia.
