Huw Edwards leaves BBC ‘on basis of medical advice’

Newsreader Huw Edwards has resigned and left the BBC, the corporation has said.

“After 40 years of service, Huw has explained that his decision was made on the basis of medical advice from his doctors” a BBC spokesperson said.

“The BBC has accepted his resignation which it believes will allow all parties to move forward. We don’t believe it appropriate to comment further.”

Mr Edwards was last year named as the BBC presenter at the centre of allegations over payments for sexually explicit images.

The 62-year-old fronted the national broadcaster’s Six O’Clock News between 1994 and 2003, when it was the most-watched news programme in the UK.

He then moved on to become the main presenter of the flagship Ten O’Clock News.
