Wreaths laid in tribute to those who died during Rising

Relatives of those involved in the Easter Rising have laid wreaths in tribute this afternoon.

The 1916 Residents’ Association commemorates those involved in the Easter Rising in a non-political and non-religious way every year.

The event took place at the Garden of Remembrance in Dublin city centre.

After a reading of the 1916 proclamation, wreaths were laid to honour those who lost their lives.

The former taoiseach Bertie Ahern delivered an address at the ceremony.

Mr Ahern urged those present to continue to strive for inclusivity, reconciliation and peace – both within our own communities and on the global stage.

“This is the commemoration of 1916, this committee have kept that tradition going right through, up to the centenary and on past it,” said Mr Ahern.

“These are the relatives of those that fought in 1916. I think it’s good that that spirit and that vision is kept into the future. I’ve always supported their cause so it’s nice to be [here] with them,” added Mr Ahern.

The Piper’s Lament was played at the closing of the ceremony before the playing of the National Anthem and the raising of the tricolour.

The official State commemoration of the 1916 Rising will take in Dublin place tomorrow.

Tomorrow’s ceremony, which will begin at midday, will be led by the President and the Taoiseach. It will be streamed live on the RTÉ News app and on the RTÉ News Channel.
