Welfare changes for Ukraine arrivals to go to committee

Legislation to cut weekly welfare payments for new arrivals from Ukraine will go before an Oireachtas Committee this morning.

Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys will bring the committee stage of the legislation to reduce the payments from €232 to €38.80 per week.

The new payment rate is expected to come into effect in early February.

The changes will also cap the time that new arrivals from Ukraine can stay in State accommodation at 90 days.

Earlier this month, Cabinet approved the legislation to reduce the supports for new Ukrainian arrivals.

Under the changes, parents of children in State accommodation will continue to receive the full monthly child benefit payment of €140.

There will also be some flexibility for people who cannot find a place to live after 90 days with vulnerable cases being prioritised.

The legislation will also mean that those receiving the new weekly payment will be required to engage with the Department of Social Protection’s Public Employment Service.

There they will receive training and skills support to help them into employment.
