Waterford makes NYT’s ’52 places to visit’ list

Waterford has been listed as one of the New York Times’ 52 places to visit in 2024.

The list, which includes locations such as Ladakh in India, Dominica in the Caribbean and Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia, puts Waterford in 30th position and is the only Irish destination named.

Described as sparkling with history and natural treasures, the New York Times notes the city’s “cobblestone core” and “a new digital trail [which] brings the past to life at stops like the medieval landmark Reginald’s Tower”.

Travel expert AnneLise Sorensen also wrote about Waterford’s “less-ancient attractions, including the new Irish Wake Museum, dedicated to the funeral ritual and the Irish Museum of Time, which showcases grandfather clocks, watches and more”.

Waterford’s Irish Museum of Time opened in 2021

The Irish Museum of Time opened to visitors in 2021 and it is the fifth museum as part of the Waterford Treasures suite in Waterford.

Waterford was also recently included on the Conde Nast Traveller ‘Best Places to go in 2024’.

In a statement, Commercial Director at Mount Congreve Trust and Waterford Treasures Sara Dolan said the New York Times list is highly regarded and often casts the spotlight on destinations for other travel writers to plan further exploration, “so we are thrilled to be included”.

She said there has been significant investment in Waterford tourism with the development of the Waterford Greenway, the opening of four new museums and Mount Congreve Gardens, “so it is very rewarding to see this investment recognised at a global level and see Ireland’s oldest city achieve the status it deserves”.
