Taoiseach Leo Varadkar will tomorrow meet Paul Reid, the Chairman of the Citizens’ Assembly on Drug Use, when the forum is set to publish its final report.
Mr Varadkar said he wanted to wait for the Oireachtas to consider the report.
“We will have to give careful consideration to any legal change,” he added.
He was responding to People Before Profit TD Gino Kenny who said the overall sentiment of the Citizens Assembly was that the criminalisation of drug use did not work.
“There is generational chance to change this course,” Deputy Kenny said.
“Something needs to happen … there is no time to waste.”
The Taoiseach said the gardaí rarely prosecute for possession of drugs but when they do it is because they believe the individual has been engaged in more than possession.
Last October, the Citizens’ Assembly on Drugs Use voted on and agreed 36 recommendations to produce a new Irish model of legislation, policy and service to reduce the harm caused by illicit drugs use.
The recommendations were agreed at the final meeting of the Citizens’ Assembly in Malahide in Dublin, concluding the work of the 100-member assembly which first met last April.
