Two men charged with human trafficking, money laundering

Two men have been charged in connection with the human trafficking of three men following a garda investigation into an alleged organised crime gang based in north Cork, with links to Slovakia and Czech Republic.

The men also face money laundering charges.

They were arrested last Saturday and taken from garda stations in the county to the District Court in Midleton where evidence of arrest, charge and caution was given.

Gardaí said they were awaiting directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions and objected to applications for bail in both cases, citing the seriousness of the charges.

Marian Vavrek, 46, of Rooskey, Co Roscommon, is charged with three counts of human trafficking and one of money laundering.

Ladislav Bubencik, 32, of Railway Road, Charleville, Co Cork, is charged with three counts of human trafficking and 20 of money laundering.

The human trafficking charges relate to the same three male victims trafficked within the State on dates between 29 August 2021 and 15 December 2021.

Judge John King remanded both men in custody, with consent to bail, subject to a number of conditions, to appear again at the District Court in Mallow via video link next Tuesday.
