The last photos before war changed lives forever

Before 24 February 2022, Ukrainian teenagers typically spent their time hanging out with friends, going to parties and generally navigating the maze of adolescence.

But their young lives changed in an instant when Russia launched its invasion, two years ago today.

Many teens were forced to flee their homes, friends and schools to seek safety, protection and assistance in unfamiliar places, such as Ireland.

According to the Central Statistics Office, almost a third (31%) of the 104,870 Ukrainian citizens to have been granted temporary protection here are aged under 20.

RTÉ News met six of these teenagers at the Ukraine Community Centre in Rathmines in Dublin.

Friends Daryna Mishchenko, Sasha Atamanenko, Sofiia Marushchak, Ksyusha Chernysh, Arina Podolska and Sofiia Mishchenko

In our video, we asked them to share one of the last photos they took on their mobile phones before war turned their lives upside down.
