Tents of IP applicants sleeping rough caught under truck

Tents belonging to rough sleeping international protection applicants were caught underneath a bin truck in Dublin after it reversed down the street where they were located.

Footage of the immediate aftermath of the incident is circulating on social media.

The tents are among more than 60 located on streets around the International Protection Office in Dublin 2.

There are approximately 100 recently arrived asylum seekers who have not been offered any State provided accommodation and currently taking shelter in the tents.

At least two tents appeared to have been caught in the undercarriage of the truck.

It is understood that no one was in the tents at the time and no one was injured, but that people do sleep in those tents each night.

Latest figures, published on Tuesday, show that 1,022 male International Protection Applicants are without any State-provided shelter after the State ceased offering accommodation to all new arrivals on 4 December.

The bin company has been contacted for comment.
