Taoiseach Simon Harris has spoken to Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, this morning on the possibility of both countries recognising the state of Palestine.
In a social media post this morning, Mr Harris said that both are “eager to make progress on this very shortly” and that their governments remain in close contact.
Both men were also expected to discuss Israel’s war in Gaza and its impact on the wider Middle East.
Spoke with @sanchezcastejon this morning on the wish of both Ireland and Spain to recognise the State of Palestine.
Formal recognition of Palestine is important as part of an acknowledgment that a two state solution is the way to bring about peace and stability in the region.

In recent weeks, Mr Harris said that the time is coming close to formally recognise Palestine, as part of an acknowledgment that a two state solution is the way to bring about peace and stability in the region.
The Taoiseach and Prime Minister Sanchez met in Dublin on this issue last month.
At the time, Mr Harris said that the point at which Ireland, Spain and other European countries can recognise Palestinian statehood is moving much closer.
He said that Ireland would move with Spain and other countries “when the time is right”.
