British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is braced for ther result of key mayoral elections in London and the West Midlands after his Conservative Party suffered heavy losses in local elections.
Despite a poor showing in results announced yesterday, Mr Sunak took consolation from the Tories’ win in the Tees Valley mayoral election, which has quelled suggestions of a move to oust him from leadership.
With the last ballots in England’s local and mayoral elections due to be counted today, the Conservative Party is counting the cost of what has been a bruising set of elections.
A win in the Tees Valley mayoral race provided some rare good news for Mr Sunak and appears to have dampened down speculation that his party might try to remove him from office ahead of a general election.
Ben Houchen retained the mayoralty in Tees Valley amid denials he had sought to distance himself from the Conservative party during his campaign.
The Tories will be hoping they can hold on to the West Midlands mayor role which is due to be announced later and expected to be a very close race/
In London, Labour candidate Sadiq Khan is vying for a third term as mayor.
Mr Khan is now believed to have a closer-than-expected contest with Tory challenger Susan Hall.
The results of several other mayoral, council, and police and crime commissioner elections will also be announced as the weekend begins.
