American-British actor and singer David Soul – best known for his role as Detective Kenneth “Hutch” Hutchinson in the 1970s’ television series Starsky & Hutch – had died at the age of 80.
Soul starred opposite Paul Michael Glaser as Detective Dave Starsky in the hugely popular show. He and Glaser reprised their roles in the 2004 movie remake Starsky & Hutch, starring Ben Stiller as Starsky and Owen Wilson as Hutch.
In a statement following the death of David Soul, his wife Helen Snell said: “David Soul – beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother – died yesterday after a valiant battle for life in the loving company of family.
“He shared many extraordinary gifts in the world as actor, singer, storyteller, creative artist and dear friend.
“His smile, laughter and passion for life will be remembered by the many whose lives he has touched.”
Soul also starred as Joshua Bolt on comedy series Here Come the Brides from 1968 to 1970 and Officer John Davis in the movie Magnum Force in 1973.
As a singer, he scored one US hit and five UK hits with songs such as Don’t Give Up on Us, a number one on both sides of the Atlantic in 1976, and Silver Lady, which topped the UK charts in 1977.
In the mid-1990s, Soul moved to the UK for a new career on the West End stage, including the role of Chandler Tate in Comic Potential, The Narrator in Blood Brothers and the lead role in Jerry Springer – The Opera.
He also appeared on a variety of British TV shows such as Holby City, Little Britain, and Top Gear.
In June 2012, Soul made a one-week appearance with Jerry Hall at Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre in a reprise of AR Gurney’s Pulitzer Prize-nominated play Love Letters.
Soul was married five times, including to actresses Mirriam Solberg, Karen Carlson, Patti Carnel Sherman and Julia Nickson, and had six children.
He met Helen Snell while performing in Deathtrap, when she was doing public relations for the play, and described her as his “soulmate”.
