Saoirse McHugh to contest European elections

Former Green Party General Election candidate Saoirse McHugh is to contest the European elections in the Midlands North West constituency as an independent.

Ms McHugh came to prominence when she ran for the Green Party in the European elections in 2019. She also ran in Mayo constituency in the 2020 General Election.

She left the Green Party following its decision to enter coalition Government with Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil after the outcome of the election in 2020.

Announcing her candidacy, Ms McHugh said: “The European Parliament affects us all in thousands of ways and for a long time now, it has acted in the interests of large, polluting corporations.

“We cannot afford to let it continue like this and I promise to do my very best to make sure we have a better future for all of us.”
