Róisín Ní Riain storms to second European gold

Róisín Ní Riain clinched a second gold medal at the 2024 European Para Swimming Championships in Madeira with a powerful display in the 100m backstroke S13 final.

Ní Riain, who took gold in the 100m backstroke with a personal best and claimed silver 100m butterfly, became a double European champion with a time of 1:06.69.

The Limerick woman, who is the reigning world champion in the 100m backstroke S13 event, saw off competition from European record holder Carlotta Gilli of Italy to claim victory.

“That was a pretty good swim, definitely some mistakes were made there but this is the kind of competition we come to that we get to learn from,” the UL student said afterwards.

“There’s some cleaning up to do but hopefully that will come”.
