Road safety appeal to motorists ahead of Bank Holiday

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) and An Garda Síochána are renewing their appeal to all motorists to act responsibly when travelling on the roads and are calling on all drivers to slow down.

Bank Holiday weekends are traditionally high-risk periods for crashes related to speeding, alcohol and drugs.

So far this year, 69 lives have been lost on roads, an increase of 16 on the same period last year.

Speed has been identified as a major contributory factor in the high number of fatalities.

The RSA said a survey has shown that one in four drivers think that speeding 10km over the limit is acceptable.

Nine new static speed cameras have been installed around the country and gardaí have revealed their locations.

There is a camera in Galway, on the N59, between Moycullen and Galway city. Another camera is located in Waterford on the N25, between Glenmore and Luffany. In Wicklow on the R772 Arklow Road in Aske, north of Gorey.

In Dublin, there is a camera at the Crumlin Road/Parnell Road/Dolphin Road/Dolphin’s Barn junction. There is also a static speed camera in Carlow on the N80 between Barristown and Levitstown.

Meanwhile, gardaí said another camera is located on the N14 east of Letterkenny in Donegal. In Mayo, on the N17 northeast of Claremorris.

There is a camera in Cork on the N22 east of Lissarda and west of Ovens, with another one in Limerick on the N69, east of Askeaton.
