Register of Interests for RTÉ staff to be introduced

A new Register of Interests and a new Register of External Activities are to commence this month for RTÉ staff.

RTÉ said it will require certain staff and contractors to make an annual return under the Register of Interests and those concerned will be written to in the coming days.

The broadcaster said it will be run in keeping with best practice as recommended by the Standards in Public Office Commission.

A new Register of External Activities will be published on a quarterly basis and will commence from 1 February.

It will apply across the News and Current Affairs and Content divisions and will introduce a standardised process for those seeking approval to engage in external activities.

Details of approved activities will be published on a quarterly basis and will include the name of the person, summary details of the activity approved and any payment or benefit in a banded system.

An oversight group will review all approvals and rejections on a 6 monthly basis with a view to monitoring decision making.

In a message to staff, the RTÉ Director General Kevin Bakhurst described the new registers as a significant step in the process of governance reform at RTÉ.

“These are important steps in rebuilding and sustaining trust with the public and in demonstrating reform, accountability, and transparency in RTÉ’s operations,” Mr Bakhurst said.

“Everyone should also note that it is a fundamental rule that under no circumstances should RTÉ locations, studios, equipment, brands (including programmes), social media links be used to promote outside commercial interests, ventures, or activities and this applies to staff, contractors and invited studio guests, panellists, etc.,” he added.

RTÉ said it will also soon consider proposals for a Register of Gifts for staff.
