Premises searched as men questioned over Cork drug haul

Gardaí are continuing to question two men in their 40s arrested in Kerry on Friday in connection with a half-tonne seizure of synthetic drugs at the Port of Cork.

The drugs are believed to be the highly-addictive drug crystal meth, with the 546kg seized having an estimated street value of just under €33 million.

It is believed the drugs were being shipped through Ireland by a Mexican drug cartel and that they were en route to Australia.

The two men being questioned by detectives in Kerry are suspected to have assisted and facilitated the transshipment.

Searches have been taking place over the weekend by gardaí, assisted by army personnel. Premises and land have been searched. They are concentrated in an area northeast and east of Tralee.

Gardaí also searched a premises in Waterford last night. The premises is connected to one of the men who is being detained and is in Waterford City.

On Saturday night at a special district court sitting in Killarney, gardaí were granted a further 72 hours to question the two men.

Their detention now runs until Wednesday morning.

If they are not charged before then, their detention may be further extended. Otherwise, they must be released.
