Pilot scheme to teach prisoners retrofitting skills

A pilot programme to train prisoners to retrofit homes gets under way today.

Prisoners close to release will be able to undergo the training in the Midlands Prison and Wheatfield Prison in west Dublin.

Minister for Further and Higher Education Simon Harris said he believes the scheme will help reduce the risk of re-offending as many former prisoners do not have specific skills to help them adapt to a new life.

He said the scheme would be targeted towards people who are coming to the end of their sentences for minor offences.

“We know we need to do more to improve education and upskilling opportunities for people in custody to support their rehabilitation and employment post-release,” Minister Harris said.

“These courses will give them the skills they need to get sustainable jobs on release, while also creating skilled workers to help deliver on our targets under Housing for All,” he added.

Laois Offaly Education and Training Board’s National Construction Centre, Mount Lucas is providing the training which is an initiative of the Prison Education Taskforce.
