The number of new electric vehicles sold in Ireland jumped 45% in 2023 when compared to the previous year, new figures from the Central Statistics Office show.
A total of 22,493 new EVs were licensed last year, up from 15,462 in 2022.
Meanwhile, the number of new diesel cars sold dropped around 4% to 25,938, while the number of new petrol cars jumped 27% to 38,746.
In total, the number of new cars licensed last year reached 159,778, up 16% on 2022.
Today’s data shows that Toyota was the most popular make of new private car licensed, followed by Volkswagen, Hyundai, Skoda and Kia.

Together, these five brands made up 50% of all new cars sold during the 12 month period.
The most popular model of car was the Hyundai Tucson, followed by the Toyota Corolla, Toyota Yaris, Kia Sportage and Volkswagen ID.4.
When it comes to new EVs, the Volkswagen ID.4 was the most popular, followed by Tesla Model Y, Hyundai Ionic and the Tesla Model 3.
EVs made up 19% of the total number of new cars licensed in 2023, up from just 1% in 2018.
Meanwhile, the share of diesel cars has dropped from 54% to 22% during that same period.
