The Taoiseach is leading the official representation at the National Famine Commemoration, which is taking place in Edgeworthstown in Co Longford.
It is understood Simon Harris will make reference to the famine unfolding in Gaza as a tool of war and the need for Israel to step back and ensure the unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid.
This is the first time the State Commemoration will take place in Longford.
The event pays tribute to all those who suffered or perished during the Great Famine and will include a wreath-laying ceremony, music, prayers of remembrance and military honours.
The Taoiseach will draw upon heartbreaking stories in Edgeworthstown, similar to those in every community across the country.
Tributes will also be paid to Maria Edgeworth, the renowned writer whose family founded the town and whose final novel – a children’s book – was written to raise money for famine relief.
Mr Harris will ask that the lessons of the Great Irish Famine be applied to the world today, working to alleviate hunger and suffering wherever it exists.
As a nation, he will speak of how it is repellent to people’s psyche to witness famine unfolding in Gaza as a tool of war.
It is understood that the Taoiseach will say it is a clear demand of Ireland, the international community and international law that Israel step back and ensure the unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid.
Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media Catherine Martin will also be in attendance at today’s ceremony.
It is understood that she too will reference international conflict and the obstruction of humanitarian aid leading to starvation.
