20-year-old shot dead first gangland victim this year

Gardaí believe a man shot dead in Dublin in the early hours of yesterday morning was the victim of a feud among criminal gangs in the city.

20-year-old Josh Itseli who had an address in the Kylemore area of Dublin died after he was shot several times on Knocknarea Road in the early hours of yesterday morning

The crime scenes connected to the murder remain sealed off for a second day today as the forensic examinations continue

Gardaí are still trying to determine the series of events that led to the murder.

The 20 year old was shot dead in a gangland attack on Knocknarea Road at a quarter past midnight yesterday morning.

Josh Itseli is the first gangland murder victim this year.

He was known to Gardaí and one line of inquiry is that he was part of a gang on the way to carry out an attack when they were intercepted and ambushed by other criminals.

He was in one of two cars, a black Mercedes and a black Volkswagen golf, that crashed at the scene in what detective’s suspect could have been part of an interception or double cross.

A third car a Silver Focus was also found nearby.

Gardaí are continuing to question the two men and a teenager arrested near the scene. One of them is a violent and dangerous criminal in his twenties who was charged with a serious offence five weeks ago and was out on bail.

He was also the victim of a recent attack and Gardai are investigating if he was seeking retaliation when the murder took place.

They have recovered a military grade AR 15 assault rifle which they believe could be the murder weapon. The firearm and a pipe bomb which the Army bomb disposal team made safe are now being forensically examined.

Detectives are also trying to identify a number of other people who fled the scene after the murder.

Superintendent Paul Maher has appealed for anyone with information, dashcam or phone footage to contact the incident room at Sundrive Road Garda Station
