Man arrested over public order offences at Wicklow hotel


A man has been arrested in connection with an incident in Co Wicklow earlier this week during which builders renovating a hotel were shouted at and told to leave the site.

The Department of Integration confirmed the building is not being prepared for international protection applicants.

The man, who is in his 30s, was arrested in Aughrim this morning and is being detained in a garda station in Wicklow.

Footage uploaded on social media shows the builder on the site of Lawless Hotel in Wicklow being told to “get out with your f***ing crew,” as a group of around 30 men and women shouted “out, out” at him.

The incident took place in Aughrim on Monday afternoon

One individual shouted at the builder to pack his “f***ing tools up” and to “get out” or he would “pack” his ” f***ing tools up.”

The builder received a round of applause when he said he would leave shortly.

Gardaí were called to the scene and have confirmed that the site is not earmarked or being prepared for international protection applicants.

A criminal investigation commenced and a man in his 30s was arrested in Aughrim early this morning for public order offences last Monday.

He is being detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and can be questioned for up to 24 hours.

The Government has condemned attacks on and the intimidation of workers.

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris has said people have a right to go to work and to go about their lawful business without interruption or being intimidated.
