There was an increase in the number of social and affordable homes delivered last year, but the figures fell short of the Government’s overall targets.
The Housing for All plan had aimed to deliver 13,130 new social homes last year, but the final figures for 2023 show that 11,939 homes were provided.
More than 4,000 affordable housing options were also delivered which is more than double the previous year’s figure.
The much-anticipated figures reveal a 16% increase in the number of new social homes compared to last year.
Some 8,110 homes were new builds, 1,830 were acquisitions and 1,999 homes were provided through leasing programmes.
Minister for Housing Darragh O’Brien said the momentum around the delivery of social homes has continued to intensify.
He said these homes are providing life-changing support to tens of thousands of people.
However, Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin described the figures presented as deeply misleading.
He said it was clear though that the Government had missed its targets for newly build social homes and this was also the case in all categories of affordable housing.
