Hozier becomes fourth Irish artist ever to top US chart

Hozier has become the first Irish artist since Sinead O’Connor, and only the fourth Irish artist ever, to have a No 1 in the US on the Billboard 100 song charts.

Hozier’s Too Sweet went to No 1 from No 2 last week, three weeks after it debuted at No 5.

In 2014, his breakthrough hit Take Me to Church reached No 2 in that chart.

Too Sweet is the first single from his fifth EP, Unheard, which was released on 29 March. The track has also topped the charts in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the UK and Ireland.

Sharing his delight at Too Sweet’s success on social media, the Wicklow native posted a video on X, telling his followers that he was “taken massively by surprise by it” and that he was “so thrilled” they were enjoying it.

Hozier joins Sinead O’Connor, U2 and Gilbert O’Sullivan as artists who’ve reached the pinnacle of the US song charts.

O’Connor spent four weeks at the top of the charts with Nothing Compares 2 U in April 1990.

U2 scored two No 1s in 1987 with I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For and With or Without You.

O’Sullivan topped the charts with Alone Again (Naturally) in July 1972.

Hozier is set to play Marlay Park in Dublin on Friday 5 July 2024. Joining him as special guests are Brittany Howard and Lord Huron.
