GPO commemoration to mark 1916 Easter Rising


President Michael D Higgins, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Tánaiste Micheál Martin will lead the ceremony to mark the anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising at the GPO in Dublin at noon.

Representatives from the Army, the Air Corps and the Naval Service will take part in the ceremony, which will conclude with an Air Corps fly past and prayers of remembrance.

The President will lay a wreath to commemorate those who died after which a minute’s silence will be observed.

At noon the national flag will be lowered and the proclamation will be read by an officer from the Defence Forces.

A brass band a pipe band will also take part.

The public are invited to attend and are advised to be in position by 11.30am.

Viewing areas are located at the Clerys side of O’Connell Street and an area has been reserved for wheelchair users at the south end of the GPO.

Large screens will also be erected on either side of the GPO and a commemorative programme will be distributed.

The ceremony will be covered live on the RTÉ News Channel.
