Gardaí renew road safety warning for Easter weekend

Gardaí have renewed their warning to road users of the increased risk of being involved in a fatal or serious road traffic collision over bank holiday weekends.

So far this year, 55 people have lost their lives in incidents on the roads, an increase of 13 on the same time last year.

Road deaths in the first quarter of the year are now at the highest rate in a decade.

An Garda Síochána’s Easter Bank Holiday road safety enforcement campaign got under way at 7am yesterday.

The operation will remain in place until 7am on Tuesday.

The Roads Policing Unit said the aim of the campaign is “the protection of vulnerable road users and the reduction in fatal and serious collisions through high-visibility roads policing and enforcement”.

With extra people expected to take to the roads over the coming days, gardaí have issued a reminder that bank holiday weekends are one of the busiest periods on Irish roads and periods where road users are at the highest risk of being involved in a fatal or serious road crash.

Gardaí say the risk is particularly high during the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.

The risk of a fatal or serious injury collision is highest between 3pm and 6pm during the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.

The highest risk day for a fatal or serious injury crash over the course of the Easter Bank Holiday weekend is Saturday.

The garda enforcement operation this weekend is focusing on intoxicated driving, speeding, mobile phone use, distracted driving and seatbelt offences.

There will also be a focus on increasing drivers’ awareness of the dangers of driving on mornings, following nights out.

Motorists are also being warned that there is a strong possibility of being stopped and tested for alcohol and/or drugs across the weekend.

Gardaí have appealed to all road users to be safe this bank holiday weekend.
