Further encampment of tents along the Grand Canal

Around 55 tents are pitched on a section of the Grand Canal in Dublin, just days almost 100 were cleared and barricades erected at another location beside the canal.

Many tents are covered with tarpaulin, making it difficult to count an exact number.

The encampment is spread across small green areas on either side of the canal where there are no barriers.

Tents have been pitched along the canal in recent weeks due to the ongoing shortage of accommodation for asylum seekers arriving into the State.

Barricades were put up along the canal on Tuesday after almost 100 tents were cleared from the area as part of a multi-agency operation, the third such operation to happen in a month.

The first took place on Mount street and the second also occurred on the Grand Canal.

Meanwhile, Minister for Justice Helen McEntee has said the number of deportation orders signed has increased by more than 50% compared to last year and the number of enforcements has increased by almost 200% over the same time frame.

She said in the coming weeks there would be a tender for a charter flight, which would “hopefully be progressed by the end of this year. So, where we have larger numbers of people being deported, we will be able to charter our own flight.”

The minister said the number of voluntary returns has also increased.

She said €36 million had been invested by the Department of Justice to increase the number of decisions per month from around 300 to around 1,200.
