Fifth road death of 2024 after man killed in Mayo crash


A man in his 30s has died in a two-car collision in Co Mayo this morning, bringing to five the number of people who have died on Irish roads since New Year’s Day.

The collision occurred at around 7.45am at Belladaff, Tagheen, near Claremorris.

The man, who was travelling alone in one of the cars, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A woman, in her 20s, who was driving the second car was taken to Mayo University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The R331 Claremorris to Ballinrobe road is closed between Claremorris and Hollymount and local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses, particularly any road users who were travelling on the R331 between 7.30am and 8am, and who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) to contact Claremorris Garda Station on 094 937 2080, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.

Gardaí are currently at the scene of a fatal road traffic collision involving two cars that occurred at approximately 7:45am on Friday 5th January 2024 on the R331 at Belladaff, Tagheen, near Claremorris in County Mayo.

The driver and sole occupant of one of the cars (male, 30s) was pronounced deceased at the scene. The female driver of the other car (20s) was taken to Mayo University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The R331 (the Claremorris to Ballinrobe Road) is currently closed between Claremorris and Hollymount while a technical examination by Forensic Collision Investigators is being conducted. Local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the R331 between Claremorris and Hollymount between 7:30am and 8am are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.
