Conan O’Brien makes his Ros na Rún debut

Irish American television host Conan O’Brien will make his Irish TV drama debut on TG4’s Ros na Rún on Tuesday 30 April – and the show will feature in O’Brien’s HBO travel series this week.

Ros na Rún has said O’Brien was in his element when the cameo was filmed on Tuesday 9 January on the set in An Spidéal.

On the day, linguistics coach Kevin Hussey “coached and challenged him to learn his first lines as Gaeilge”.

“Getting to work with the cast and crew of Ros Na Rún was a delightful highlight of my trip to Ireland, and I apologise in advance for inadvertently butchering my mother tongue,” said O’Brien.

Marion Ni Loingsigh, Ros na Rún series producer, described it as “thrilling” to receive a request from O’Brien to appear on the show while filming his travel series Conan O’Brien Must Go in Ireland.

“Who better to pair the famous US TV personality and comedian with than our very own leading legend Tadhg Ó Direáin, played by Macdara Ó Fátharta?” she continued.

“It was fun to create and film, and audiences will see a perfect delivery of Gaeilge by HBO’s Conan O’Brien in what is an abrupt but entertaining exchange with Tadhg.”

Teeing up the cameo, Ros na Rún said: “On Tuesday 30 April at 8:30pm, Ros na Rún’s village rogue and publican, Tadhg Ó Direáin, is faced with a feisty delivery man who’s having none of Tadhg’s arrogant nonsense.

“Standing his ground, comedian and HBO Max TV personality Conan O’Brien, the new Ros na Rún delivery man, is certainly no pushover for Tadhg as a war of words is declared between the two in Tigh Thaidhg.

“Loyal fans of Ireland’s only rural-based TV drama will have to watch and see if Vince gets his balloons for his party and if publican Tadhg throws the legendary TV personality Conan O’Brien out of his pub.”

Ahead of O’Brien’s cameo, Ros na Rún is set for global exposure this week when it appears in the Ireland episode of O’Brien’s brand-new HBO Max Travel series, Conan O’Brien Must Go, on Thursday 18 April.

“We were beyond thrilled to host Conan O’Brien,” said Mairéad Campbell, Ros na Rún‘s production manager.

“Two stalwarts of TV on either side of the Atlantic, deeply rooted in their respective Irish heritage and culture, and bringing our beautiful Irish language and Ros na Rún, TG4’s drama series, to a brand-new worldwide audience. We could not have had a better start to 2024.”

Previous Ros na Rún guest stars include the actor Stephen Fry, singers Daniel O’Donnell and Nathan Carter, hotelier and At Your Service presenter Francis Brennan, and Virgin Media presenter Alan Hughes.
