It is World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) and events are being held around the globe to celebrate the achievements of people with Down syndrome in the fields of employment, education, self-advocacy and beyond.
WDSD is celebrated annually on the 21st day of the third month as a representation of the extra copy of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome that people with Down syndrome are born with.
It has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012 and the theme this year is “End the Stereotypes”.
We asked Eric Nolan and Sinéad Friel, two members of the National Advisory Council for Down Syndrome Ireland, to do just that by answering some commonly searched for questions about what it’s like to have Down syndrome.
