Calls for DPP to reverse decision in George Nkencho case

Campaigners for George Nkencho, who was shot dead by an armed garda outside his home in Clonee, Co Dublin three-and-a-half years ago, have demonstrated outside the Department of Justice.

They protested against the decision by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) not to prosecute the officers involved in the fatal shooting of the 27-year-old in December 2020.

The campaigners called for last week’s decision by the DPP to be overturned.

The Nkencho family say they will appeal the DPP’s decision

Ruth Coppinger from the Socialist Party told the demonstration that the DPP’s decision was “totally unacceptable” and that “justice delayed is justice denied”.

Liam Herrick, from the Irish Council for Civil Liberties, said the Nkencho family is entitled to know how he died and the circumstances around it.

Mr Herrick also said it was a human rights case and the State has an obligation to carry out an effective and independent investigation into his death.

The Nkencho family have previously said they will be appealing the DPP’s decision.

George’s mother, Blessing, was among those who attended this evening’s event.
