Appeal to Irish builders working abroad to return home

Irish construction workers abroad are being urged to return to Ireland to help with home-building targets.

A total of €750,000 is being provided for the Careers in Construction programme which will also try to counter negative assumptions about a career in construction.

Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris is in London today meeting Irish building workers.

Minister Harris said many Irish workers had left Ireland during the economic crash and are still working on building sites around the world.

“A part of this funding will be used to engage with construction workers abroad to assess the motivations for moving abroad and establish any barriers to coming home,” said Mr Harris (above).

The programme will also involve a social media campaign to encourage more people into the industry and dispel some ‘myths’.

“There are fears construction is a boom and bust career, or that it is for a certain gender, or a certain stage in their career,” he said.

Mr Harris said it is vital to support people in the sector so that the State can meet its targets in the Housing for All programme.
