74 candidates declared for forthcoming European election

A total of 74 candidates have declared for the forthcoming European Parliament elections across the three constituencies of Ireland South, Midlands-North-West and Dublin.

Nominations have now closed and prospective candidates have until midday tomorrow to withdraw from the contest.

Voting will take place on Friday 7 June in both the European and local elections.

There are 23 candidates running in both the constituencies of Ireland South and Dublin while 28 candidates are contesting the Midlands-North-West constituency.

The Midlands-North-West constituency has five seats as does the South constituency.

In Dublin, four MEPs will be returned.

Counting of votes will begin for the EU elections at 9am on Sunday 9 June.

The large number of candidates means the count process will take some time.

In Midland-North-West, Fianna Fáil is running three candidates including Niall Blaney, Barry Cowen and Lisa Chambers.

Outgoing MEP Maria Walsh is joined on the Fine Gael ticket by Nina Carberry.

Sinn Féin MEP Chris McManus is standing for re-election, along with party colleague Michelle Gildernew.

Independent Luke “Ming” Flanagan is also hoping to retain his seat.

The National Party is fielding two candidates, James Reynolds and Justin Barrett.

Brian O’Boyle will run for People Before Profit, while Pauline O’Reilly is the Green Party representative.

Peadar Tóibín is standing for Aontú, the Labour Party is represented by Fergal Landy while Ciaran Mullooly will run for Independent Ireland and Margaret Alacoque Maguire is running for Ireland First.

Anthony Cahill is standing under The Irish People banner, Rory Hearne will contest for the Social Democrats and Herman Kelly is running for the Irish Freedom Party.

Several non-party candidates have also declared. They are: Michelle Smith, John Waters, Dr Gerry Waters, Saoirse McHugh, Charlotte Keenan, Peter Casey, Daniel Pocock and Stephen Garland.

Carolyn Fahy is listed as a candidate for the Party for Animal Welfare.

Counting of votes will begin for the EU elections at 9am on Sunday 9 June

In Dublin, three sitting MEPs are contesting the election.

They are Fianna Fáil’s Barry Andrews, Clare Daly of Independents 4 Change and Ciarán Cuffe of the Green Party.

Sinn Féin has two candidates, Lynn Boylan and Daithí Doolan while Senator Regina Doherty is running for Fine Gael.

People Before Profit -Solidarity will be represented by Bríd Smith, the Labour candidate is Aodhán Ó Ríordáin with Sinéad Gibney standing for the Social Democrats and Aisling Considine for Aontú.

Niall Boylan is running for Independent Ireland with both Rebecca Barrett and Patrick Quinlan standing for the National Party, Philip Dwyer is the Ireland First candidate, Diarmaid Ó Conaráin will run for the Irish Freedom Party and Andy Heasman is standing for the Irish People Party.

Non-party candidates include Dr Umar Al-Qadri, Stephen O’Rourke, Malachy Steenson, Robin Cafolla, Brendan Ogle, Conor Murphy and Eamon Murphy.

Despite expressing an interest in contesting these elections, former Minister Finian McGrath has decided not to run.

In the South constituency, outgoing MEPs including Fianna Fáil’s Billy Kelleher, Fine Gael’s Seán Kelly, Mick Wallace of Independents 4 Change and Grace O’Sullivan of the Green Party are running again.

John Mullins is also standing for Fine Gael and Cynthia Ní Mhurchú is the second Fianna Fáil candidate.

Kathleen Funchion and Paul Gavan are standing for Sinn Féin, with Niamh Hourigan running for Labour and Susan Doyle for the Social Democrats.

Patrick Murphy is the Aontú candidate, Cian Prendiville is running for People Before Profit-Solidarity and Eddie Punch will represent Independent Ireland.

Derek Blighe is standing for Ireland First, Ross Lahive for the Irish People party and Michael Leahy is the Irish Freedom Party candidate.

Non-party listed candidates include: Una McGurk, Graham de Barra, Christopher Doyle, Michael McNamara, Lorna Bogue, Mary Fitzgibbon and Ciaran O’Riordan.
