29 days of rainfall in some areas in March

Rainfall was recorded on 29 days in some parts of the country last month, according to Met Éireann’s climate report for March.

In the report, the forecaster said March had above-average rainfall in most places, particularly in the south and east of the country.

It found that rain fell on 29 days at Shannon Airport, Co Clare and Ballyhaise, Co Cavan.

Belmullet, Co Mayo had 20 days of rainfall.

The most rainfall recorded in a single day was at Dublin Aiport on Thursday 1 March, with 45.3mm, which was its highest daily record for the month in the last 82 years.

The highest monthly recording was at Valentia Observatory which had 239.8mm of rainfall throughout the month, making it the wettest March there since 1963.

Some areas recorded over 200% above-normal rainfall for the month with Finner, Co Donegal having 219% above-normal levels.

Yesterday, Met Éireann Climatologist Paul Moore said the country saw “145% of its long-term average rainfall” last month.

Speaking on RTÉ’s News at One, Mr Moore said that “last March was actually the wettest March on record” but the difference between this year and last year is that “February 2023 was a very dry month, whereas February this year was also very wet”.

“We’re coming off a wet winter into a wet beginning of spring as well,” he said.

Separately in its farming bulletin, Met Éireann said the week ahead will be unsettled, bringing showers and rain and some heavy downpours at times.

It said soil conditions in fields are expected to worsen due to the rain.

Conditions at the moment are preventing planting and turning livestock out of sheds.

The forecaster said moderately or poorly drained soils will be waterlogged and all other soils will be saturated with all the forecast rainfall.
