The National Youth Council of Ireland (NCYI) has urged eligible young people to register to vote ahead of key elections and referendums this year.
The deadline to register for the upcoming referendums is tomorrow evening at 5pm and NYCI is urging people to register to vote online.
There are over 730,000 people aged between 18 and 29 who are eligible to register to vote in Ireland.
This represents almost 1 in 5 of those of voting age in Ireland.
While most young people want to vote, not all are aware they have to register according to the NYCI.
“This is particularly an issue among the almost 70,000 young people who turned 18 and became eligible to vote in the last 12 months.”, it said.
NYCI’s Director of Policy and Advocacy Paul Gordon said young people “are part of a cohort that could prove hugely influential” in this year’s elections and referendums.
He said it was important to ensure “no young person missed the opportunity to participate” and added that the advent of online voter registration, meant it had “never been more straightforward”.
For those unsure whether they are registered or not, the NYCI has advised that they check online at www.checktheregister.ie.
For those not yet registered, the process can be completed online at the same site, where a PPSN, date of birth and Eircode are required.
