Woman’s body may have been in Cork house for over a year

A body, believed to be that of an elderly woman, has been discovered at a house at the Lough in Cork city.

It is understood foul play is not suspected and that the body may have been at the house for some time, possibly more than a year.

Formal identification has not yet taken place.

Gardaí were called to the house this afternoon. It is understood that when they got there they found the body in an advanced stage of decomposition.

The remains were removed to the morgue at Cork University Hospital.

A post mortem examination will be conducted in the coming days to try to establish the cause and time of death.

Gardaí say the results of that post mortem examination will determine the course of their investigation.

The office of the coroner for Cork city has been informed and it is expected that gardaí will compile a file for an inquest at a future date.
