Why are girls not called Brigid anymore?



The St Brigid’s Day Bank Holiday is upon us and a nationwide programme of events to celebrate the life and legacy of Ireland’s matron saint is continuing.

But will the celebrations do anything to revive interest in the name Brigid?

The Central Statistics Office has data on baby names dating back almost 60 years.

It has traced the popularity of the name Brigid, as well as several variations of the name.
