Westmeath man wins Emmy award for prosthetic makeup



A prosthetic makeup artist from Co Westmeath has won a Creative Emmy award at last night’s ceremony in the US.

Johnny Murphy from Ballinagore and his colleagues received the award for Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup for their work on the critically acclaimed HBO series The Last of Us.

Mr Murphy and the team received the award at the Creative Arts Emmys ceremony at the Peacock Arts Theatre in Los Angeles.

Mr Murphy has over 10 years’ experience in prosthetic sculpture, application, painting, mold making as well as a range of other skills.

He’s worked on numerous high profile tv shows and films including The Last of Us, Carnival Row and Into the Badlands.

On his Instagram page he shares some of his creations, including practicing his craft on his wife Melissa Groome.

Johnny’s father Timothy Murphy said that his son had always backed himself to win an Emmy, and said that he had been telling them he was going to do it “for many years”.

“We supported him as best as we could in the pursuit of that dream” he said.

“And he was the most diligent person I have ever known, in his work ethic on that journey.

“As for the local reaction…we are still celebrating and have not been out yet, but answering all the well wishers.

“It’s a great day for us as a family, and for Johnny and Melissa.”
