Motorists are being urged to drive with care as temperatures are set to drop below freezing overnight, leading to difficult driving conditions.

Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow low temperature and ice warning for the entire country.

The warning will be in effect from 6pm this evening until 11am tomorrow morning.

The forecaster said it will be very cold overnight, with outbreaks of light rain, drizzle, sleet and snow in places, with the wintry showers becoming increasingly confined to the west and north as the night goes on.

Temperatures will drop to around -4 degrees Celsius and there will be a severe frost and icy stretches.

It will remain very cold tomorrow, with frost, ice, fog and freezing fog slow to clear, leading to hazardous driving conditions.

Met Éireann also said that the low temperatures may cause issues for vulnerable people.

Meanwhile, the UK Met Office has issued a Yellow ice warning for Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry, from 5pm until midnight.

It warned that ice will readily form on untreated surfaces this evening leading to hazardous conditions.
