War cabinet minister Gantz quits Netanyahu government

Israeli minister Benny Gantz has announced his resignation from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s emergency government, withdrawing the only centrist power in the Israeli leader’s far-right coalition, amid a months-long war in Gaza.

Mr Gantz said he was quitting the government after threatening last month to leave over the lack of post-war strategy for Gaza.

“We are leaving the unity government with a heavy heart,” Mr Gantz said in a televised address.

He also called on Mr Netanyahu to set an agreed election date.

He described the decision as “complex and painful”, but added that Mr Netanyahu’s “political considerations are impeding strategic decisions” in the Gaza war.

“Netanyahu is preventing real victory,” he said.

Responding to the resignation, Mr Netanyahu said that “this is no time to abandon the front”.
