Voters to take to the polls in three electoral contests



Voters take to the polls today in contests that will give an insight into the thinking of the electorate for the first time since early 2020.

Voting will take place in three electoral contests – the local elections, the European elections and the contest to elect a mayor for Limerick.

Polling stations will open at 7am and lose at 10pm this evening.

These are the first nationwide elections in more than four years.

More than3.7 million people are registered to vote in the local elections

They will choose 949 councillors in 166 local electoral areas.

Nearly 3.6 million people are registered for the European elections.

They will choose 14 Members of European Parliament (MEPs) across the three constituencies of South, Midlands-North-West and Dublin.

The 157,000 registered voters in Limerick city and county will also choose the country’s first directly-elected mayor.

Ballot boxes will be opened tomorrow morning with votes then sorted and verified.

Counting in the local elections will begin then.

While European counts get underway on Sunday with first results expected after 10pm.

The Limerick mayoral election will be counted on Monday.

However. with lengthy ballot papers, full results will not be known for several days.
