UK lowers terrorism threat level for NI to ‘substantial’

The terrorism threat level in Northern Ireland has been lowered by the British government from ‘severe’ to ‘substantial’.

This move by Britain’s MI5 intelligence agency means attack is now ‘likely’, compared to an attack being ‘highly likely’.

In March last year, the terrorism threat level in Northern Ireland had been raised to ‘severe’.

It came ahead of an expected visit by US President Joe Biden to mark the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.

The decision to change the threat level is taken by the British security service MI5, independently of ministers.

The threat level has previously been lowered in March 2022 – the first time in a decade – after reduced levels of dissident republican activity.
