Tumbleweed engulfs homes in US state of Utah

The western part of the United States has seen blizzards and high winds over the last few days and one video filmed on Saturday showed tumble weed swarming across roads and overtaking houses and vehicles in Eagle Mountain, Utah.

A local news station, Fox 13, said wind had taken down trees and some neighbourhoods had been taken over by tumbleweed overnight.

There were similar scenes in Nevada, also on Saturday.

The US National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for Nevada, Northwestern Arizona, and California’s Death Valley, with winds expected to reach up to 56km/h.

While seen as a symbol of the American West, tumbleweeds are a non-native weed – the Russian thistle – was introduced into the United States in the late 19th century, according to the US Department of Agriculture.
