A man has appeared in court in Co Leitrim charged with the murder of his mother in Sligo last May.
Angela Canavan’s body was discovered at her home at St John’s Terrace in Sligo town on 1 May 2023.
Her son Nigel Canavan, 38, with an address at Erris Gardens, Erris Street, Crossmolina, Co Mayo, appeared before Carrick-on-Shannon District Court this morning.
Mr Canavan was arrested at Erris Gardens at 4pm yesterday afternoon.
Giving evidence of the arrest and caution, Detective Garda Eamon McDonnell said Mr Canavan was subsequently taken to Sligo Garda Station where he was charged with murder.
Detective McDonnell said when Mr Canavan was cautioned he replied that he was not guilty.
Mr Canavan’s solicitor John Anderson applied for legal aid for his client.
Judge Michael Connellan granted legal aid and set the date for his next hearing.
Mr Canavan was remanded in custody and is due to appear again at Sligo District Court on Thursday via video link.
