SF wants Mental Health Commission to regulate CAMHS

Sinn Féin is seeking to introduce legislation to give the Mental Health Commission the power to regulate CAMHS.

Party Leader Mary Lou McDonald said vulnerable young people are currently locked out of the system and cannot get help.

She told the Dáil about a ten-year-old girl called Maggie who is in “a full blown crisis “and is not receiving the help she needs.

Public Expenditure Minister Paschal Donohoe said more posts and roles will be filled to provide mental health services for young people.

He said this year’s budget will allow for new multi disciplinary teams and a central referral system to get help to more people.

Before summer he pledged that legislation, containing 35 measures, will be brought before the Dáil to provide greater regulation of mental health services.
